Immediately after the purchase we should set off for home because for his short life our little hamster has already experienced too much and finally needs a real tranquility and normal development. First in the warren he has been torn away from his fellows, then follows the excitement of the transportation to the zoo shop and then again stressful situations in the lighted cage and the completely new environment and finally a after a few days we choose him to be our pet and he has to change his habits once more. That’s why on our way home we have to keep the box from the shop in a standing position and immovable in order to prevent the small animal from additional worries.

Getting used to the new home

We have to prepare everything before let the hamster in his new home: the cage with the house or the crittertrail , flooring, wheel and bowl for food with a little dry mixed fodder should be ready to meet their new owner. When we transfer the little rodent from the box into the cage the lightening must be more muted. At this moment keep yourself calmed because the unknown noises and smells had already discouraged him enough.

The hamster carefully examines his new surroundings with cautious movements and ceaseless sniffing around after which in most cases hides in the house. But do not become disappointed. Leave him disappear in his house while decides to go out for his own. This temporary withdrawal in the protected hollow is the first step to the familiarization and acceptance of the environment.
As soon as the hamster appears again, give him some titbits and speak to him with calm and friendly voice.
On the next day you should strictly wait till his time for rest is over and he activates during the late afternoon or evening. If you leave your new pet in peace during several days he will soon understand that there is no danger for him when you get near to his cage. The hamster won’t even try to bite you or protest if you take or fondle him.
Children often want to boast of their new acquisition to the neighbors which is understandable but we cannot expect from the hamster to appreciate this. If he gets a new shock this could frighten the already relaxed hamster and stop the process of domestication. It has to pass at least two weeks before the little hamster will be able to have quests and never during the day but only in the evening since this is the time when he is awake.

How to hold the hamster correctly

Sometimes from the right keeping of the hamster in the hands depends the whole taming. That’s why we must be extremely careful and not to take him nervously and feverishly for some part of the body in order to hold him in hands. Trough similar actions you could incite even the most peaceable hamster to bite you. You also never have to catch the animal with two fingers for the fur of the neck. The fast and certain catch is easier than we think and is going on the following way: we envelop the hamster from above with the palm as loch his stomach between our fingers without pushing him.
Another appropriate manner is to make the animal lift up on our palm and with the other hand catch him from above. For the older golden hamsters the first method is more felicitous for their size.

From the adaptation to the taming

The timing of a hamster that already get used to us is much easier than we think. The main preconditions for the domestication are patience, observing the necessities of the hamster and their satisfaction.
Like people hamsters also love with the stomach so small titpits and quiet speaking will help you to get into contact with him. When the hamster takes titpits from your hand you can try to fondle him gently on the back. If at the beginning he still doesn’t let you touch him in the course of time you will gain his trust and he won’t be afraid of you any more.
At the next stage you can let him walk in your apartment. But before put him on the ground you should try first on the table which is considerably bigger than the hamster cage . Little obstacles always tickle the fancy and even there are and little titpits behind them, your pet will be happy to do this regularly. It is interesting to observe how the hamster gathers all the food which finds in his huge mouth pouches in order to store it later in his cage. If during the time when he spends out of the cage or in your presence he is scratching, you can be sure that you have coped with the task of taming your little rodent.

In our days are selected much more humble and quiet generations of golden hamsters using the selection method of breeding stock than two decades ago. As if the desire of the fans of these little rodents will carry out and they will become real pets. Two of my fluffy females correspond to this tendency. Only within three day the eight weeks animals completely get used to the cage and people’s hands as a result of the regular accession to them. They weren’t scared at all when I was doing something in their home in which they were quietly living. Even my son at the age of year and a half who approaches them very impetuously cannot invade their privacy. The same is the case with our dog which stands before their cage and sniffs with curiosity.
The process of domestication the golden hamsters is so advanced that in the near future tame golden hamsters will be already raised. But man will always have the key role of evoking and stimulating this tendency.
